Looking for info on GWNF, I'll be driving through Roanoke area in a couple weeks and have a couple free days on March 31 and April 1, would love to hit a mild trail on the way...

I understand a lot of GWNF is no longer open to Jeeps, anyone know what's still open? I could run blacks at RC, but looking for a bit milder as my wife prefers a few less jolts to the neck than I do... Really looking for maybe 4-6 hours at most.

Thanks for any help.

I have never been there, so make sure you get all the info the rest of us need when we go.

Most of the "fun" stuff is now closed.

You going alone?

It's isolated in the Forest. No cell service.

Here's a report from last fall: http://www.delawareja.com/forum/index.php?topic=26426.0

Running up to the knobs is relaxing and relatively safe.

I wouldn't try Dictum alone.

From what I found on the official site, it's not officially open on ANY ORV/OHV trail until after the thirt Monday in March, and may be delayed due to leftover snow due to erosion concerns... but at least VA seems to be giving SOME thought to the desires of folks with full width offroad vehicles for the future.

Looks like it may be a pass this time, but interested if a trip there happens later in the year, I'm gonna hit RC this weekend and get my wheeling jones rubbed.

Not sure what MJC does, but DEJA usually does a trip in the spring and fall.

I used to live in Roanoke, and I have a good buddy who still lives there . . . if you would like, I can ask him for some recommendations of where to go in the area. If he's free, he may even be able to show you. He actually used to be on here when he lived in Baltimore; his screen name is Sciron4X4, had a pretty beastly ZJ, now he has a nice XK.

I was just there this weekend. There are plenty of trails. Most are easy and the advanced ones are closed during the winter months. If you go to GWNF site you can get a PDF of the Motor Vehicle Use Map.
