I am asking for a friend.

A recently purchased a 2006 Jeep Liberty. When she fills the gas tank gas spews back onto the vehicle. Is this a known problem with the Liberty? Does anyone else have an issue?

My neighbor has one and it happens to her aswell. It blows out the top when it`s full.I think the fill hose in the body is to small and fills up so fast that it belchs out before the cutoff on the pump handle can respond.

Same here, although for reasons I can't explain I didn't have this problem until about a year ago.

some times theres a vent for the evap system that will stick and not release pressure inside the tank when filling up thus causeing the back flow.. i have not seen it on any libbys but have incountered it on a few jags..

Interesting - I have had it start happening this past summer and it has happened from time to time and it does seem to be happening more often as I go along. Sounds like I need to stop by a dealer and have them check it out....of course any warrenty I had is probably gone since it is "modified".

Try filling with the trigger only half pressed. Some newer pumps have incredibly high volume delivery. I'll also bet that there is a tight radius turn just inside the filler neck, and turning the pump to one side or the other might prevent the problem.

That is what I was thinking since it seems that most of the pump handles seem "new/different", but even with the pump handle set at the slowest feed rate I have had it "burp" fuel, I have seen some pumps that I cannot even set the feed rate at 50% because it is trying to feed so fast.

you know my buddy has this problem too on his liberty........

but i have had a few of my other non jeep/chrysler vehicals do this as of late also.......i read somewhere its because of the ethenol they add to the fuel now.....it almost acts like yeast in the fuel tanks and are causing pressure in the tanks so now the fuel is pushing out faster than ever before.......dont know any truth behind that tho

I'm glad to find this forum and this question. I brought home my new-to-me 2005 Liberty on Friday. I filled the tank that night and wasn't too happy to see gas spew out and down the side. I hate that it happens, but kinda glad to see it isn't just something wrong with mine. I'll keep reading here and trying any and all suggestions for reducing or eliminating this.
