carb vs fuel injection

Post by bamo4722 » Sun Nov 03, 2013 9:26 am

Hi everyone,

I am looking for a Jeep, but do NOT want a carb. I thought by 91 they stopped making carbs, so when I set up to meet the seller of a YJ, it turned out to be a carb so I didn't buy it. I found another one I'm interested in looking at, but this one is also a 91, but it's fuel injected. Both are stock. What connection am I not making..again I thought by 91 all YJ's were fuel injected? I owned a 90 a few years back and HATED having a carb. I have the Jeep itch again and want to buy another one, but I definitely don't want a carb. Can someone explain to me why there were two stock YJ's in the same year where one had a carb while the other was fuel injected? I should note that I'm a chick so all of this information about engines, carbs, fuel injection, etc is very intimidating. Most Jeep owners (at least the ones on here) work on their on vehicles and can tinker around and adjust carbs when needed. I, on the other hand cannot. I am just not savvy enough and don't know anyone that could help me. Thankfully, my mechanic, whose shop is right down the street from me owns a TJ, so he is at least familiar with Jeeps and can work on mine if/when I buy.

Welcome, and glad to hear you're getting back into the Jeep game. You're correct, the '91s should have the "high output" 4.0 injected inline 6. My guess is the first YJ was originally a 4 cylinder, and someone swapped in an older 4.2 inline 6 carb'd engine. I have to think you're better off going with the second YJ, or keep looking if that doesn't work out.

My mechanic actually went to look at the first YJ with me. He said it was a four cylinder and a carb. He mentioned that I could always rebuild the carb to a Weber, but that isn't an option for me.

91s were fuel injection for the i6 and seemed to be 92 and later for the 4. http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f12/freq ... re-451154/ jeepforum has a lot of spec answers
