Bestop tailgate bar and a hard top

Post by mmacro » Thu Apr 24, 2014 4:36 pm

I am looking to but a soft top on my TJ during the summer and I'm told that I need to install a tailgate bar to secure the rear window. I looked at the brackets that you mount at the edge of the tub rail to snap the bar into and it looks like it will interfere with the hard top window when I put that back on in the winter.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Any ideas?

I thought about using nuts/bolts instead of the screws the supplied to instal the brackets... Just drill the holes a little larger for bolts and then I can take the brackets off when I put the hard top back on.

I don't have a soft top on my TJ, but do have a tonneau which uses the soft top brackets for the tailgate bar. It's been a few years, but I'm pretty sure those brackets have to be removed before putting the hard top back on. I'll know this weekend for sure, I'll be taking the hard top off and putting the bikini and tonneau cover back on for the first time in five years.

Edit add: I do remember having to drill holes to mount the brackets to the tub. Hopefully I can find everything...moving still sucks.

We have the hardtop on my wife's tj right now. The factory soft top brackets never got removed in the 3 or 4 winters since we have aquired the hardtop. The only part of the soft top that "NEEDS" to be removed is the door surrounds. Technically you dont even need to remove the soft top.
