Need a painter for my CJ project

Post by Boodyrider » Sun Jan 23, 2011 7:15 am

Tub swap is well along, but I need to line up a painter who's got the stuff it takes to spray urethane paint. As much fun as it might be to try to spray the base/clear or single stage... I don't have an appropriate painting setup for modern paint, and I'm gonna spring for something that will last on the Cj... but that means it'll kill me if I breathe it.

Anyone have a paint booth, or know a guy, or have another kind of hookup? I'm not afraid of the hard work sanding that'll be involved, just thinking it'd be good to survive the actual painting.

I have a guy in Bel Air who does side work, he sprayed two doors and a hood for $200, of course they were off the vehicle and all the prep work was done by me all he did was shoot some paint but he did a GREAT job way better than I expected and it was a two part system the clear was soooo deep it looked fantastic after I lightly buffed it, any way if you want his number pm me, I would prep the tub and let him shoot it off the frame, just my .02! also he did offer to do my tub but I can not remember how much he quoted me.

Oddly enough, MAACO did a really nice job on my tub. $370 for a tub, grill, tailgate, and two hoods - out the door. I did all the prep work.

That's a killer deal right there.
Although, I was being serious about the inmate special.

I'm tending away from MAACO and the like simply because their paint is so-so for long term durability; they usually use acrylic enamel, or may be moving towards the water based stuff now. I'm probably looking at a urethane, and their pricing is kinda out there once you move to better paint and to base/clear, which I'll have to do as my coloris a metallic, and singe stage metallics are damn near impossible to get to look great, even with a really experienced painter.

I'm not saying no way to MAACO at this point, but really would rather learn more along the way, which means a less formal arrangement.

Which MAACO location was it?
