Dana 300 tera low kit

Post by thezman » Wed Dec 14, 2011 10:52 pm

Just picked up a second 300 and a rebuild kit. I want to take it a part sand blast powder coat whole 9 while doing rebuild and thinking of getting the tera low while I'm doing it. Anybody got it? Really worth the money? I don't know this will be my first transfer case rebuild so I'm just wondering.

Lomax gears are, or were when I bought them, cheaper than the Teralows. They are also bigger and look better built. I've run both and havent had any issues with either. I ran the Teralow gears the longest and originally bought them because at the time they were cheaper than the Lomax gears.

I'd buy Lomax if the cost was the same or cheaper. I really dont think you can go wrong with either of them though.

Argh, damn edit button.

I personally wouldnt bother powder coating it and probably wouldnt bother sand blasting it unless you have the equipment. A wire wheel on a grinder will do wonders followed by a coat of paint. I didnt even bother painting mine.

Unless of course you have access to the equipment or money burning a hole in your pocket.

I have a blast cabinet big enough for the case. Buy the media and I can do it for you. Aluminum should really be done with glass bead, NOT with sand. If it's a steel case, the black sand Tractor Supply carries works great and only runs like 8 bucks a bag. (Glass bead is a good bit more...)

Alternately, there's a place in Frederick does blasting and powder coating, for a very reasonable price.

Case isnt aluminum.

This doesnt seem like a bad deal considering what they are going for on JB Conversions website.

Boodyrider- thanks for the offer i may take you up on that in the future.

Frosty- thanks for the look out but i will have to pass for the time being. the funds are running low put my trans in yesterday and found i need new motor mounts and they need to be moved back about 2 inches. the dude that put the 302 in really just slapped this thing together its ugly under there.

wesleypipesyo- how much double xp do you think that dude got?

I put Lowmax in mine and they work great. I have heard terrible things about the earlier Tera Low kits. They had alot of breakage and apparently Tera Low was aware of them but did nothing for the customers to compensate. Check out Pirate 4x4 and search "tera low" not alot of good being said. All my experiences with Advanced Adapters has been great, good tech support and very knowledgable staff. They even answered my questions on a Sunday.

What trans do you run? Do you have a granny gear? I am currently running the stock t-5 and 4:10 in the axles and the 4;1 made a huge difference. With a granny gear like a NP435 or SM465 with a 6:1 I wouldn't need it.

It will always make a difference. I am not sure if I have ever heard anyone complain about too low of a crawl ratio. I say go for it. If you dont like it, sell it and buy a different d300. You could probably make money on it if you did it that way.

I am not saying too low would be a bad thing, just with the right trans it may not be worth dropping $500 on right now if money is an issue. Just my 2 cents.

Now is the time to do it though if he is going to have the thing apart. If he decides later it is too much money for the benefit, he can sell the tcase for more than he would pay for a stock 300. And still be okay.

i think im going with the low max anyway. i have a spare transfer case right now that im going to be doing a complete rebuild to. im really just going for stronger. i bought the axle set of ryan so im only running 355 ratio for now. i have a stock 300 in it now the other one is a long term thing. and if there is no need for it im sure i could sell a complete rebuilt transfer case with the low max and make my money back outta it.

Are you going to replace the outputs as well? I did the rear output but kept the front stock. from what i have heard the front is strong enough stock but the rear would be a good upgrade.
