Steel Blue Build

Post by tealo951 » Mon Aug 06, 2012 12:45 pm

Okay, so I'm finally getting around to actually building up my jeep, and figure a build thread now would be more entertaining I watch/follow along with than when I just got it.

First off, I had a black Tj but that sank and has since begun new lives on as an organ donor to many other jeeps.

I now have a 1998 Steel Blue TJ Sport. It looked like this when we got it

Steel Blue Build

Post by tealo951 » Mon Aug 06, 2012 1:39 pm

This is what it looks like today.
It has on it, by the previous owner, a 2" procomp lift and a 1" body lift.

I have since installed a fabtech front bumper, high rock off road rear bumper, brown dog motor mount lifts, 33" dura trac tires, custom reverse lights, custom dash center stack, rock lights, driving lights, hood mounted hi-lift and light KC bar, CARR windshield light bar, JKS adjustable sway bar links, and CB with dual whips.

I have a plan of attack on the next stage of the build.
I have:
HP30 front axle w/ 4.10's
Ford 8.8 rear w/ 4.10 limited slip
TNT adjustable front track bar for OTK steering
SYE and CV extended travel DS
Barnes4wd flat Trans skid
UCF works LoPro Trans mount
8 Rough Country adjustable control Arms
BDS front adjustable front track bar
Bilstein shocks for 3" lift

I still need these parts, or have just ordered them:
Artec 8.8 truss and TJ brackets - ordered
Hard lines
Soft lines
Longer front break lines
Engine/oil pan skid

That should be it for the driveline of my jeep. And I hope to have all these parts installed and wheeled before I go to boot in Feb.

I also have a CJ tailgate I want to install on my TJ, I also want to finally get more lights and a which on my jeep too.

I have another thread that I started a while ago asking for advice on which way to go, which i still use. It can be found here

Thanks for any and all input and constructive criticism. Lol hope this can help other too.

I'm a bit confused, you've listed both TNT and BDS front track bars, and the TNT is for an OTK steering setup. Are you thinking about going high steer on the Data 30? If so, you'll probably need to lose or relocate the axle side sway bar mounts.

Also, I don't see anything listed about the rear track bar. I think I saw you mention something earlier, but I'm too lazy to go look. If you haven't already, make sure your 8.8 bracket kit is set up for use with a CV axle. That way you won't need to use a separate bracket or an adjustable track bar in the rear.

Give some thought to upgrading your steering. A cheap way to go that'll strengthen up the weakest link is to swap the stock tie rod for a V8 ZJ tie rod. Every time I'm in the just yard I pass a few of these, so they're easy to come by as well. Also, you'll want to beef up the diff covers, or at least put some sort of guard on them. It doesn't take much to bend up the stock cover to the point it leaks.

Correct. I do have both an adjustable stock type BDS track bar and a TNT track bar that recuires the frame bracket welded on, which I have, and an axle bracket welded on, which I don't have yet.

I have thought about the steering, and I'm going to go with the GM 1 ton steering kit from Ruff Stuff Specialties when I have the funding. But for now the stock steering will do okay. I have two complete stock set ups at the moment..

I have been looking at dif covers, but I haven't decided on a manufacturer yet.

As for the rear track bar right now I have a stock one. And the bracket kit that I purchased allows you to set the pinion angle and have the rest of the brackets in the correct orientation. Also, the track bar bracket has several different height options to mount the bar to. So that should be okay.

Tyler has a solid aluminum tierod for a TJ D30 at my shop he wants to sell if you are interested.

for diff covers, go with a plate steel style one from ruff stuff, barnes, or bluetorch fab. dont buy the crappy cast ones. they can crack if you hit them in the right spot.

Oh okay. Cool, that'll help out. Thanks for the tip. And for the eventual use of your garage. :)

Well, it's Latin. And Julius Caesar said it after inialating a city and it means, "I came, I saw, I conquered."

The instructions look to be vary straight forward and easy to follow. Too.

Now to cut off the old brackets and freshen up the axle to get ready to have this put on.

Did you just straighten your stock tie rod or did you pick up a ZJ rod?

Replaced the steering from his HP30, so stock components.
