Let's play guess that noise!

Post by sherwoodiv » Fri Apr 03, 2015 12:32 pm

This is a 2001 TJ with a 4.0L,NV3500, NP321 (no SYE) and about 2.5-3" lift. I have a 1" MML, 1" BL and no TCase drop.

After leaving Rausch last weekend I noticed a nasty noise at highway speeds. I am having trouble diagnosing. It's coming from the center console area, but obvious that is where the hole in the tub is. It kind of sounds like small rocks getting rolled around a can, but also has a grinding noise to it too. It comes alive around 30 MPH. When I'm going 55mph, the sound will not change if Im in 3rd gear with high RPMs, or 5th gear at lower rpms. It also is unchanged with the clutch in or out, in gear or in neutral. It seems to be starting at lower and lower speeds. Initially I didnt hear it until 50+.

I've checked the shielding around the exhaust on the tub, and the front cat bulbs. I pulled off the loose shielding around the muffler, and removed a broken exhaust hanger. I banged the cat and didn't hear any rattling. The transfer case fluid was changed recently and it still has fluid to the fill plug. I just recently put the MML, BL on and removed the TCase drop.

Pinion yoke movement: https://youtu.be/KGST10Ub0og
Front transfer case play: https://youtu.be/uPOua_1by5Y
I imagine both of those are bad and not helping
