XJ headliner

Post by Baby_Gray_XJ » Mon Jul 28, 2014 10:47 am

Hey everyone it's time to get into another project with my XJ, this time I'm replacing the headliner since it's in a very poor state at the moment.

I'm not crazy on the idea of simply putting on a new fabric liner as I can do something a bit more custom.

Does anyone have any ideas or advise when pulling out the headliner?

Wear a dust mask and goggles.

Get all the plastic stuff out of the way, removal of the board is easy. Wearing a mask, rip off the old fabric without damaging the backer board.
Use a stiff brush to rub off as much of the old dried out foam as possible.
JoAnn fabrics sells replacement foam backed headliner material locally. Or whatever you like.
Cut fabric to allow for a full inch wrap past the edges, or even 2 inched wrap. You can always cut excess off later.
Use 3M headliner adhesive, and follow directions. Yes it's expensive, but it works. Nothing else really does. You want a complete layer without too much excess buildup, damp all over but not too wet.

Get a helper or two to lay the headliner onto the backer all at once, rub or use a rubber roller to press into indented areas.

Once it's all dry, reinstall.

I redid the headline in a car and the results lasted longer than the original did, and looked better too.
97 TJ. It has some stuff.

I got my replacement headliner at a salvage yard. It costs $35 only.
