White River National Forest Releases Travel Plan Supplemental DEIS
The White River National Forest, located in central Colorado, has just released their Travel Management Supplemental Draft Environmental Impact Statement (SDEIS). The Notice of Availability was posted in the Federal Register on Friday, November 7, 2008, and the Forest Service (FS) will be accepting comments during a 60-day comment period, which will end on January 6, 2009.
The SDEIS is a continuation of the Travel Management process that has been ongoing for several years. This document incorporates the 2006 Travel Management DEIS, provides more focus, and provides in-depth information on the national Travel Management Rule. Forest planners also created different alternatives to address primary issues stemming from public comments on the DEIS. Some information is updated and portions of the document are simplified, in response to public comment.
The public is encouraged to read the document and provide comments for consideration in preparing the Final Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement. The resulting travel management plan will designate a travel system designed to balance public access and recreation needs with natural resource protection, during all seasons of the year.
The SDEIS and associated maps are available on the Forest's website at: http://www.fs.fed.us/r2/whiteriver/projects. Please review the documents and maps closely and try to make your comments as site-specific as possible, preferably by referring to those specific roads or trails with which you have concerns.
THE COMMENT DEADLINE IS JANUARY 6, 2009

What you should know about making a comment on the Travel Management Plan and SDEIS:
Comments that are concise and specific are less likely to be misunderstood and are of greater value when being considered. Recommendations about specific roads, trails, or issues and the rationale are most useful.
Form letters and petitions are the least useful, since issues will be based on the content of individual comments rather than the quantity of comments received supporting a particular side of an issue.
Comments, names and addresses received on this proposal will be part of the public record and may be included in the final EIS and available to anyone who requests to see them.
Your comment should include:
o Name, address, telephone number and organization (if applicable)
o Title of the document you are commenting on
o Specific facts and supporting reasons for the responsible official to consider
Your comments, including your name and address, will be considered part of the public record on this proposed action and will be available for public inspection.
If you have any questions or desire additional information, please contact Wendy Haskins, Transportation Planner, at (970) 945-3303.
JUST REMEMBER, PUBLIC INVOLVEMENT IS CRUCIAL TO KEEP RECREATION AREAS OPEN, PLEASE GET INVOLVED!
