you can use a craftman screw driver as a stethescop in a pinch
stick the metal end to the part and stick you ear to the plastic end

I am not kidding
it will work
I used to try and isolate whther I had a fualty injector on my neon last year
its not as accurate as an actual scope but in a pinch it'll help
my revolving door of vehicles contines to spin.........
now I have a 2011 F150. 5.0L

racing hoss I changed the tranny fluid and filters a few weeks ago. It seems to shift fine and everything. I'm totally at a loss as to where the noise is coming from. I'm hoping its something easy that I am just overlooking but I don't know. It's beyond me to find where it is coming from so sadly I believe I will be taking it somewhere to find out what it is. I'm planning on finding what it is and then replacing or fixing it on my own.

According to the guys on the Liberty forum, the noise I am hearing could be from getting dirt or water in the rear diff. But when we changed the fluid in the rear diff it just looked old, not dirt or water.

The whole thing just leaves me scratching my head.

Any vibrations with it? Pinion looks OK? No leaks or movement? Driveshaft in good shape?

Nope no vibrations. Pinion looks good. No leaks, doesn't move. Seems to be fine.

Hillbilly and I checked it all out and neither of us could figure out what was causing the noise.

I'm going to pull the wheels off this weekend and see if see anything else that looks like it might be causing it.

Nope. Rechecked everything over the weekend and it is still there. Going off what the LOST board said I'm guessing it is the rear diff and I'll have to put up with it. I am taking it in on Tues to have things checked out though. Just to see what it really is.

My bad, rear pinion bearing is bad and needs replaced. Apparently there are two parts rear main bearings a front one and a rear one, don't know which on it is yet. Quote from the stealership was $971. Quote from an outside source is $250. It goes to the outside source on Thurs. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Update, it wasn't just the rear pinion bearing. The rear gears are worn. The mechanic said the only way Jeep sales them is the gears/carrier and the install kit price $1400....yikes. I posted on lost about it and a guy on there has his gears from when he re-geared to 4.10's. He only had the in for 25K miles so I figure they ought to be good enough to last in this thing of awhile. Gears and carrier $75, plus I gotta get the install kit that I found online for $80 but I just posted to know where to Jeep to see if he can get it for me. So after the parts come in it goes back to Berkeley Springs to get the rear rebuilt. I'll keep you guys posted. It tripped 107K yesterday.
