Aluminum isn't a bad idea. But ditching the solid axle? WTF!

The aluminum body I don't mind. Axle wise I think it`s a bad idea. But you never know. I have a small block Chevy in my CJ and it`s dry weight is 2800 lbs. The lighter the vehicle. The less strain on the drive train.

I don't mind the aluminum idea at all. There's a really good reason why aluminum is used where possible to save weight for offroad reasons or onroad. When I get a tummy tuck my skid will be aluminum. If I ever get flat fenders or corner armor they will be aluminum. I have aluminum control arms. Lighter weight is good for the drivetrain like you said and also more nimble on the rocks. I've seen big heavy rigs fail at RC while lightly built rigs walk over the same obstacle because they were lighter (shoot the moon comes to mind).

But the idea of ditching the solid axle is stupid as F. I don't know why I give a crap. It's not like I'll be buying a new one. My TJ should last my lifetime and if I get another it'd be a CJ.

Love Al all of my after market skids are AL, and a IFS wont be bad if done proper. But the odds of that are slim sadly.

We went through this (axle talk) when the JK was still in development...hopefully it doesn't go too far from the roots of open air Jeeps. The JK has become the 4wd minivan. They are nice, but the likely hood of ours actually getting played with is slim.

the aluminum is going to happen. with gubment mpg req's going drastically higher there is only 2 "EASY" ways to make that happen. reduce the overall size or reduce the weight of the current size vehicle. and since no manuf. wants to make a very popelar vehicle smaller, the only answer is to make it weigh less.
sadly, I also think an IFS wrangler will come in time, but I dont think it will be on the next gen wrangler.
cowby is right. every upcoming generation of jeep creates an uproar of speculation over what may change, and until there is concrete evidence of a change, why get worked up over it.

independent keeps wheels on the ground. isnt that where one wants them? the more travel on a straight axle, the more ur on ur tires edge.
